The Research and Consulting Services department has a diverse team of talented individuals. Each member of the team has solid experience in numerous areas, offering solid research services and consulting on community development, community social planning, accessibility, and income security topics.

Karen Lai

Karen LaiProject Coordinator – Karen is pleased to join the team in July 2008 where she will focus her projects on accessibility and inclusion issues. She has been working for the past eight years in recreation for people with disabilities such as kayaking, skiing, or hiking. She is extremely passionate in breaking down the physical, social, psychological or emotional barriers faced by people with disabilities and enhancing the inclusiveness of the community. She recently completed her Masters of Arts from the Department of Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia where she concentrated her thesis on the meanings, experiences, and strategies of inclusion for people with disabilities in outdoor recreation. She is excited to be working on projects that truly enhance the betterment of British Columbia.

Jim Sands

jim photo Project Coordinator - Jim has extensive experience working with community development projects and non-profit organizations. He has worked with seniors, people with disabilities, and multicultural groups as a project coordinator and volunteer coordinator. He has also researched and written on a variety of issues including health, disability, and media issues, and has developed and facilitated educational programs for a variety of audiences.

Karen Thompson

karen thompsonResearcher - Karen has been involved in a number of projects related to accessibility and community development. She is currently working on accessibility and inclusion studies for two BC municipalities, and a municipal social plan. Karen has also served as coordinator for Learning Initiatives for Rural and Northern BC (LIRN BC), which provides funding and organizational support to community capacity building events in rural and northern BC. Karen holds a Master of Planning degree from Queen’s University where she specialized in Social Planning, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia. She has also worked as an intern at the Ministry of Land and Resources, People’s Republic of China.
